Te Pa Harakeke Park

Nestled within the Tahunanui Reserve in Nelson, Te Pa Harakeke is a community park that has been thoughtfully reimagined around the ecological and cultural significance of the harakeke plant. The name itself reflects the vision behind the space: harakeke, or New Zealand flax, symbolises family and community in Maori tradition, with each part of the plant representing a different generation. This idea forms the heart of the park's design, where the landscape tells a story as much as it serves a function.

The park centres on a restored wetland environment that was once home to a modellers pond, now transformed into a living ecosystem woven with native plantings, open lawns and gentle waterways. Visitors can follow accessible pathways that wind through the reserve, taking in the seasonal changes of the planting and the birdlife that has begun returning to the area. The design was developed in close partnership with the local community and iwi, ensuring the space reflects the people and place it belongs to.

For families, the park offers generous open space alongside dedicated play areas that draw inspiration from the natural environment rather than conventional playground equipment. Whether people come to walk, picnic, play or simply sit quietly beside the water, Te Pa Harakeke is a place that invites everyone in. It stands as an example of how public green space can honour both ecological restoration and cultural identity at the same time.
