Tahunanui Beach is Nelson's most popular beach - and for good reason. This large sandy beach is close to town and offers plenty of space for both land and water activities.
The front section of Tahunanui Beach is a great spot for a safe swim in the warm waters of Tasman Bay. It's mostly shallow and lifeguarded during the main season, making it ideal for families. At the far end, known locally as the 'back beach', swimming isn't recommended due to strong currents in the Blind Channel during tidal changes. The back beach is also the only area where dogs are allowed on the beach.
If you want to launch a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, waka, or any other small non-motorised watercraft, you'll need to do so near Rocks Road in the designated launch area. Just make sure to stay outside the swimming zone marked by black buoys.
When the wind swings from northeast to southwest, kite surfers will want to take note, Tahunanui can serve up some fantastic conditions to get out on the water.

Beyond the beach, Tahunanui Reserve has plenty to keep you and your family entertained. You'll find playgrounds, a go-kart track, a waterpark, tennis courts, BBQ areas, a large sports green, and even a library. Kids especially love Natureland, a charming little zoo and the sit-on model train rides that run on weekends.
The beach volleyball courts next to the beach café are a real hotspot during summer, with locals and visitors jumping in for a game or just soaking up the atmosphere.
Over the summer holidays and New Year period, the sports green often comes alive with extra attractions like bouncy castles, inflatable play areas, and carousels - perfect for keeping the little ones happy.
