Split Apple Rock is a large granite boulder, naturally split down the middle into two near-perfect halves, sitting just offshore between Kaiteriteri and Marahau at the southern edge of the Abel Tasman National Park. In Maori mythology, the story goes that two gods quarrelled over the rock and in the struggle split it apart.

A well-formed track leads down to the beach, an easy 20 to 30 minute walk return. At low tide you can wade out to the rock itself, and with the water shallow and the beach at its widest, there's room to explore the small nooks and caves tucked along the northern end. In summer, it's well worth bringing your togs for a swim in the clear blue water.

If walking isn't your thing, you can also reach it by kayak or boat tour, both available from Kaiteriteri and Marahau.

How to get there

If you're in Kaiteriteri, take the Kaiteriteri Sandy Bay Road towards Marahau. After approx. 5 km Turn right onto Tokongawa Drive. Follow the road for about 800m and turn right into Moonraker Way. There's a carpark at the end which might be crowded during the high season.
